In Swahili, Daraja means bridge.  The Daraja Academy seeks to continually bring students, volunteers, and friends to Africa together with our Kenyan students and campus for a week, or many days.  It is our vision for the Daraja Academy that the following groups will find a home at our campus.

High School and College Students:
Throughout the American school year we will be maintaining regular communication via email and paper mail between students in the U.S. (and other countries) and our Kenyan students.  They will have opportunities to exchange ideas related to music, entertainment, sports, news, and friendship while also collaborating on project-based questions focused on technology advancement, health initiatives, philosophic treatises on peace and government, and economic development, among others in a virtual classroom setting.  These cross-cultural exchanges will culminate with visits by groups of students to the Daraja Academy both during the U.S. school year and during the summer.  As a part of the visiting High School/College program, each Kenyan and American student will cultivate the tools (literally and emotionally) to remain in contact with one another as they move into their adult years.

Volunteers:
It is our goal at Daraja to model service learning, thus helping our Kenyan students grow as individuals and as part of a global community.  Volunteers who visit the Daraja Academy have the opportunity to participate in, and help shape this dynamic community through their thoughtful service.  As a volunteer at Daraja you may contribute your own skills in music, art, poetry, theater, web design, math, photography, film-making, cooking, educating on green technology, and in countless other ways.

Amigos de la Africa:
Modeled after the long-standing community-development program Amigos de las Americas, The Daraja Academy will serve as the platform for the very first Amigos de la Africa summer project bringing volunteers ages 16-25 to live and work in Daraja and our surrounding Kenyan community.  This project will be the first of many that will eventually be initiated in Tanzania, Uganda and other African countries in need of community sanitation, school renovation, health outreach, establishment of community computer centers, youth to youth leadership training, agricultural/ecological endeavors and many other projects determined by community needs assessment surveys.  In an increasingly smaller world filled with famine, genocide and terrorism, Amigos de la Africa will provide positive, proactive leadership and education to the developing countries of Africa, while learning in turn from the people of these culturally profound nations.
