Communications Intern Position- Nanyuki, Kenya

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for girls in Kenya with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but no means to continue their education. The stunning campus is located near Nanyuki, Kenya, 4 hours northwest of Nairobi.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The incredible communications internship position located on campus in Kenya opens up once a year so be sure to submit your application! The communications intern plays an extremely important role on campus as they are responsible for managing campus communication to supporters abroad, with a major emphasis on social media. A journalistic background is extremely beneficial, as the intern will be reporting on various aspects of school life. Position tasks vary from updating the social media to preparing packages for student sponsors to implementing creative marketing campaigns. The intern will be working closely (albeit remotely) with Daraja’s marketing manager in California.

This is the perfect position for someone that wants to transition into the nonprofit world. It is an excellent way to gain nonprofit marketing experience while getting to know the education system in a developing country. You get a chance to be a pivotal player in a rapidly growing organization. Most importantly, you get to meet the inspiring students that make this project so powerful!

 

DETAILS

Location: Daraja Academy campus

Duration: 6-month internship with possibility of extension up to 1 year. Past interns have opted to extend.

Start time: February-March

Compensation:  This internship is available for school credit if desired. Food, housing (with personal shower and bathroom) are provided. Reimbursement provided to cover work expenses.

Employment Type: Full-time, 30-40 hours a week.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

-  Strong writing skills

-  Detail-orientated

-  Fluent English speaker

-  Strong work ethic

-  Self-starter, ability to take initiative

-  Firm understanding of Web 2.0 applications such as Facebook and Twitter

-  Flexible personality given that intern is working in the unpredictable environment of a developing country

-  Positive Attitude

-  Preferred:

  • Experience with marketing tools such as Constant Contact and WordPress
  • Experience traveling in a developing country
  • Journalism background
  • Inquisitive and adventurous spirit
  • College graduate
