For nearly two years, the girls’ appreciation for their education and general nature of the school has created a culture in which bad behavior is quite uncommon.  In fact, a mere “warning” has been sufficient in the rare event that a Daraja girl does break the rules.

But as Daraja prepares to welcome 26 new students, there is a rising realization within the administration and staff that there needs to be a set of rules and consequences implemented to manage the growing student body.

In light of Kenya’s newly passed constitution, the school has decided to create an official Daraja constitution. It wil be designed and approved by the Daraja students before going into effect.

Last Friday, the administrators came back from Mombasa and held a school wide meeting in which they discussed creating a consitution that would surround the four pillars. As many of you know, there are four pillars that are considered to be the foundation of Daraja Academy. Each student is expected to abide by these rules. The four pillars are:

1) Be accountable for the role you play at Daraja, neither neglecting it, nor abusing it.

2) Maintain open communication, speak honestly and listen respectfully.

3) Embrace differences and treat all with dignity and respect.

4) Everyday, leave it better than you found it.

The picture above was taken during last week’s meeting when students divided into small groups to discuss various consequences that should be enforced if someone breaks a rule. The students agreed that the punishment should relate to the deed.  For instance, there is a rule at Daraja that you must speak a language that is understood by all parties in attendance. This means that you must speak English if you are with Kenyans, Danes and Americans because English is the mutual language. If you break this rule, you are neglecting Pillar #3.

When asked how this should be dealt with, Mercy, Form 2 responded that the culprit must write a report in both English, Swahili and the student’s mother tongue!

The initial meeting last week was just a brainstorm and nothing was finalized. The next Daraja constitution meeting will be this Wednesday. In the meantime, there is a comment box in the dining hall. All students are encouraged to place their ideas in the box prior to this week’s meeting.  We will be sure to keep you updated with the constitution’s progress!
